Learning Outcomes

Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry students will:

  • Demonstrate a firm foundation in the fundamentals and application of current chemical theories including those in analytical, 生化, 无机, 有机, and physical chemistries.
  • Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills, especially the ability to transmit complex technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, problem solving, and quantitative and analytical reasoning skills.
  • Carry out chemical experiments properly, troubleshoot experiments, appropriately record and interpret the results, and recognize what constitutes “reasonable” data.
  • Use standard laboratory equipment, modern instrumentation, and classical techniques to carry out experiments.  Follow proper procedures and regulations for safe handling and use of chemicals.
  • Function successfully as a part of a team, exhibit good citizenship in group interactions, and be an active contributor to group projects.

The biochemistry degree gives the perfect balance between chemistry and 生物学 classes. All of the professors are friendly and welcome any questions.

Abigail Myers

Biochemistry '21

Biochemistry major Abigail “Abby” Myers worked with Assistant Professor of Biology Andrew Koob on a research project to find treatments for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Abby says she chose to study biochemistry because it taught her the ability to relate chemical processes to human life, and it will help her reach her goal of becoming a scientist. She plans to earn a PhD in biomedical science and says Koob played a huge role in her decision to apply to graduate school.
